    Rohit Sharma is an Indian international cricket player and is captain of the Indian Cricket team in ODI and T20 formats. We take a look at his life.

    Rohit Sharma’s Early Life

    Rohit Sharma is a man from humble beginnings, having been born in Bansod, Nagpur, to Gurunath Sharma. His father used to work at a storehouse as a caretaker for a transport firm. Due to his father’s low income, he was raised by his uncles and grandparents in Borivali while his parents used to live in a one-room house in Dombivli. 

    He started playing at a Cricket Camp in 1999 and was later awarded a scholarship at Vivekanand International School on the recommendation of his coach, Dinesh Lad. 

    He started as an off-spinner and focused on batting after scoring a century in the Harris and Gilles School tournament in March 2005. He made his List A debut in the same month at Gwalior for West Zone against Central Zone in the Deodhar Trophy. He went to play for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy in 2006-07 and scored 205 off 267 balls on his debut against Gujrat.

    Rohit Sharma’s Cricket Life

    Rohit Sharma made his international debut in a one day match against Ireland in Belfast on June 23, 2007.

    He made his first appearance in the Cricket World Cup in 2015 and played eight matches for the Indian Team. He scored a total of 330 runs during the tournament, with one century in the quarter-final against Bangladesh. He scored his first half-century on November 18, 2007, against Pakistan at Jaipur. 

    He went through a bad phase of form during 2012, scoring only 168 runs in the whole calendar year with an average score of 12.8 runs. His career was revived when MS Dhoni showed faith in him and decided to move him up the batting order during the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy.

    In November 2013, he made his Test debut with a bang, scoring a century against the West Indies in Kolkata. He scored his first overseas Test century against England on September 4, 2021, with an innings of 127 runs.

    He was appointed as the Vice-Captain of the Indian Squad in the 2019 Cricket World Cup. He finished the tournament as the leading run-scorer with a total of 648 runs and won the Golden Bat award.

    In November 2019, he became the first Indian cricketer to play in 100 T20 matches. He was nominated for the ICC Men's ODI and T20I Cricketer of the Decade awards in November 2020.

    Rohit Sharma is popularly known as the ‘Hitman’ of Indian cricket. He has rightfully earned the title with his combination of aggression and caution. His deadly shots, timing and class make him special to watch and bring excitement to the playing field.

    Rohit Sharma’s IPL Career

    Rohit started his IPL career in 2008 with Hyderabad Deccan Chargers, but was sold to Mumbai Indians in the 2011 IPL auction. He was selected as the captain of the team in 2013. Under his leadership, Mumbai Indians have won the tournament five times in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020. He also won the Champions League Twenty20 in 2013 for Mumbai Indians.

    Ahead of the 2022 iteration, he has played a total of 213 IPL matches since 2008 with an average score of 31.17 runs per match and a run rate of 130.39. He is the only Indian player in the Indian Premier League to have scored a century and taken a hat-trick. He took a hat-trick in 2009 while playing for Deccan Chargers against his current team Mumbai Indians. He brought up his first and only century in IPL so far against Kolkata Knight Riders in 2012.

    He is one of the most successful captains in the IPL and has scored more than 5,200 runs, making him the fourth highest scorer in the competition.

    It has been confirmed that he has been retained by Mumbai Indians for INR16 crore for IPL 2022.

    Rohit Sharma married sports events manager Ritika Sajdeh on December 13, 2015. The couple has a daughter named Samaira Sharma who was born on December 30, 2018. His wife gave him the nickname, Ro which was later picked up by his teammates.

    Rohit Sharma has been involved in philanthropic activities for a long time. He has donated INR45 lakhs to PM Cares Fund, INR25 lakhs to CM Relief Fund and INR5 lakhs to Feeding India. He is also a huge supporter of Animal Rights and is an active member of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. 

    He has been involved in raising awareness against plastic Marine pollution and was a part of the Run for the Oceans campaign. He is also the Rhino ambassador of India and has been helping kids undergo successful cancer treatment at Tata Memorial Hospital in Mumbai.
