IPL 2022: Teams with the most tons

From the inaugural season, we saw many centuries being scored by various players taking the benchmark of this league to new levels

RCB tops the list with 15 centuries scored till now RCB tops the list with 15 centuries scored till now

In the first match itself, we saw the league's first century with Brendon McCullum's astonishing 158. In comparison, it's surprising that Kolkata Knight Riders, with just one ton in 15 editions, grabbed hands on the title twice, whereas, despite being full of power-hitters and maximum tons, teams like RCB and PBKS failed to own the crown. Let us look at the teams with the most number of centurions throughout the years.

    Royal Challengers Bangalore

One of the strongest contenders of the league, Royal Challengers Bangalore tops the list with 15 centuries scored till now. The credit for this record goes to the deadly trio of RCB- AB de Villiers, Virat Kohli, and Chris Gayle. With these, the team had one of the most star-studded batting orders among all groups. These three superstars had been a significant pillar in RCB's batting line-up. The Universe Boss Chris Gayle himself holds 5 out of the 15 centuries for RCB, including the gigantic score of 175. After him, the former skipper Virat Kohli scored five centuries for the team. The first century for the Challengers came from Indian batter Manish Pandey in the league's second edition in 2009. Despite having the most tons in the company, the star-studded team is yet to win their maiden IPL trophy, which is disappointing considering the team's reputation and fanbase all over.

    Punjab Kings

Despite being an unpopular team in the league, Punjab Kings (formerly known as Kings XI Punjab) has seen the second most tons in the IPL history. Overall, 13 centuries have been scored till now for the franchise. South African destructive batter Hashim Amla and former skipper KL Rahul have scored two centuries each for the Punjab Kings. At the same time, Shaun Marsh scored the first century for the Punjab Army in the inaugural season in 2008. KL Rahul's 132 in the 2020 season is the highest ever score recorded for the franchise. However, for this season, the Mayank Agarwal-led team could only win seven out of the 14 matches played, and with 14 points, they finished in the sixth position in the 10-team league table. Despite ranking in the number of tons, the team is yet to win their maiden title.

    Rajasthan Royals

Rajasthan Royals have scored as many as 12 centuries in the thirteen seasons. The first team to win the title grabs the third spot in the list of most centuries. English wicket-keeper batsman Jos Buttler scored the most number of centuries for the franchise. Out of the four centuries, three came in the league's current season. The former captain and batsman Ajinkya Rahane scored the initial century for RR and held the record for most runs for RR. Rahane has scored 3098 runs for the franchise. The Royals won the trophy in the first season under Shane Warne's captaincy; however, the team has yet to win the title. In the current season, the team has played brilliantly under Sanju Samsons' captaincy and is one of the top contenders for the title. The team will indeed look forward to their second title this season.
