MI and KKR could release probable players

Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders have a contrasting start to the Indian Premier League 2022

Tymal Mills: Mills most likely be released from Mumbai squad Tymal Mills: Mills most likely be released from Mumbai squad

While KKR had a decent start winning three of the four matches once, MI struggled to fetch even a first win, only to become the first franchise to be eliminated from the playoffs race. While Mumbai Indians were dealing with losses, KKR lost its plot and was found lingering at the bottom of the points table. KKR struggled for a stable opening pair throughout the season, with most of them failing to provide good starts to the team. The bowling concerns cost heavily for KKR and MI, as they could not control the opposition in their innings. In the future, the team management is expected to release some players based on their team's combination and form in the latter half of the season.

Three players that MI might release

    Tymal Mills

The bowler did not have a good outing with Mumbai Indians. The English pacer played five matches for MI and was expected to lead the bowling attack alongside Jasprit Bumrah but was ruled out of IPL 2022 due to an ankle injury. In the five matches played, he didn't have many impressive figures. He scalped six wickets, carrying an average of 31.67 and an economy of 11.18, which is very expensive considering it's a limited over game. And if Jofra Archer joins camp next year, Mills will most likely be released as they have found decent pacers in Daniel Sams and Jaydev Unadkat to call upon.

    Fabian Allen

Fabian Allen is another West Indies all-rounder that doesn't fit well in the Mumbai squad. He got one match and took one wicket at the cost of 46 runs, making his economy 11.50. The all-rounder might feel a lack of chances if released, but considering the remaining squad, he was never a reasonable bid, not at least to fill the void of Hardik Pandya. With Kieron Pollard losing intent this season, MI will seriously hunt for a good all-rounder in auctions.

    Mayank Markande

The leg-spinner rose to the limelight in 2018 after having a breakthrough season with Mumbai Indians. However, he played a few outings for Rajasthan Royals before being repurchased by MI. Being one of the two pure spinners with Mumbai, he was expected to have a decent role. However, the youngster got just two games, warming the bench for the rest of the matches. The franchise's handling of the spinner shows clear signs regarding management's intentions with him as a long-term plan. The team might look for an international spinner in the following auctions.

Three players that KKR might release

    Aaron Finch

The Australian white-ball skipper has played for the ninth franchise in this IPL. He came in as a replacement for Alex Hales in the KKR squad for his base price. He played five innings for the team and returned with figures of 7, 58, 3, 0, and 14. His lack of contribution at the top-order, and that place being one of the prominent reasons for the downfall of the franchise in this season, might force them to drop Finch next season.

    Ajinkya Rahane

The 33-year-old opener for KKR has always tried to play second fiddle to his partner. Snapped at his base price, the opener had a hot and cold season. Starting this season with a game-winning knock of 44 off 34 against CSK, his performance declined to 9, 12, 7 and 8 in other outings. This followed a hamstring injury which kept him out of different league stage matches. He will likely be released with just 133 runs in his bag as an opener in 7 innings. And instead, the team might look for some international opener or a middle-order striker.

    Shivam Mavi

Being part of KKR since 2018, the pacer has not yet left his mark on the franchise. In the 2021 edition, he scalped 11 wickets in 10 matches at a terrific economy of 7.24, making him one of the key bowlers. However, in the sixth appearance of this edition, he was struck for 50 runs in his four-over spell against Lucknow Super Giants. He was dropped in the last three matches of the league stage; management might look for the services of some other fast bowler next season.
