Cricket News: Three debutants who made a splash for India in 2022

It’s fair to say that 2022 was a year to forget for Indian cricket. Yes, there were undoubtedly some high points but the major takeaways from the year for fans were the twin failures at the Asia Cup and the T20 World Cup

However, India’s talent pool in the sport remains robust – and that can be seen in the fact that several players were given chances to be a part of India’s squads throughout the year. There were several debuts throughout the year as well.

Here we looked at the three best debutants for India in 2022.

Arshdeep Singh – After consistently impressing in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for the Punjab Kings, Arshdeep was finally handed a chance to show his mettle in an India jersey, and it is fair to say that, for the most part, he did not disappoint.

He didn’t get a chance to do too much in ODI cricket, as he played three matches and didn’t pick a single wicket. However, his impact was massively felt in T20Is as he took 33 wickets at an average of 18.12, an economy of 8.17 and a strike rate of 13.3.

Fans and team management hope he continues to showcase such feats and show improvement in the coming year, as Arshdeep Singh became a first-choice player in the year but still has room to get better, which is a scary thought.

Deepak Hooda – Long seen as someone who can make a splash in white ball cricket for India, Hooda finally got his chance to do just that in 2022, and it is safe to say that he made the most of whatever opportunities he got.

Hooda was a key player with both bat and ball – at least when his captain handed him the ball – and his best moment with the bat came in only his third T20I innings when he scored a ton against Ireland in Malahide.

He also ended up with 4-10 in a T20I against New Zealand while generally being a dependable player to get a couple of overs out of. The all-rounder will hope for more chances to shine in 2023.

Umran Malik – The Jammu and Kashmir pacer had Indian fans chomping at the bits to see him in the national team jersey after a breakthrough IPL in 2022, where he regularly clocked speeds over 150 km/h and troubled batters with his ability to be speedy and hit the stumps whenever possible.

He was handed his T20I debut against Ireland but, unfortunately, has been expensive in the shortest format, having taken just two wickets at an economy of 12.44. But in ODIs, he has looked much better, taking seven wickets at an economy of 6 and an average of 28.28.

His inconsistency is down to the fact that he is still raw. Still, the potential and ability to bowl at excess speeds means he will be a part of the Indian set-up for the foreseeable future – and could well be India’s X-factor comes to the next ICC tournament.
