After defeating Nick Kyrgios, Novak Djokovic won his eighth Wimbledon championship. But why did he eat grass after claiming victory?

Novak Djokovic defeated Nick Kyrgios in four sets to win Wimbledon for a record-tying seventh time overall, making him the only man to have won the tournament more than him.

Along with his victories in 2011, 2014, and 2015, Djokovic also claimed victories in 2018, 2019, and now 2022.

Djokovic now has 21 grand slams under his belt, one fewer than Rafael Nadal. But why did he eat grass on Centre Court after taking victory once more?

Novak Djokovic doesn't have a particular reason for eating grass after winning Wimbledon; it's just something he does.

He said to Sue Barker of the BBC that he had dreamed of winning Wimbledon as a child and that it was just something he did after winning in 2015.

He also thanked the All-England Club grounds team for their efforts in setting up the court.

The Future of Novak Djokovic is uncertain

Djokovic may not play another grand slam for another year, despite winning Wimbledon and eating the grass there.

Due to his lack of vaccinations, Djokovic will not be permitted to go to the US for the US Open in September, and his future travel plans to Australia after his expulsion in January are also up in the air.

If so, he won't participate in another grand slam competition until the French Open at Roland Garros in May or June 2023.
