In his second Grand Slam final of the season, he will hope to replace Russian Daniil Medvedev as the new world number one.

Fifth-ranked Rudd was a runner-up to Rafael Nadal at the French Open in June. The Norwegian had never crossed the third round in New York before.

Ruud and his 27th seeded opponent, who dispatched Nick Kyrgios in five sets before crashing into the final four, broke each other two times in the opening set.

However, the tiebreak favoured Ruud, who won a 55-shot rally to convert his third set point. He took the second set in 33 minutes as his double break in the third and fifth games set the pace.

Khachanov levelled the score shortly after in the 12th game of the third set. Although Ruud's sloppy forehand was advantageous for the Olympic silver medallist, he couldn't keep his pace in the fourth and final set of the match.

Rudd broke the Russian's serve 2-1 using a pinpoint forehand pass and broke him again at 4-1. He quickly secured three match points and wrapped it up with a drop shot as Khachanov stood helpless behind the baseline.

"After Roland Garros, I was extremely happy but at the same time humble enough to think that could be my only final in a Grand Slam in my career. They don't come easy," said Rudd. "It feels beyond words to describe."
