US Open: Carlos Alcaraz survives Marin Cilic to meet Jannik Sinner in the quarter-final

    Cilic had to save 12 of 18 break points after making 66 unforced errors. The 19-year-old Alcaraz has become a title favourite after the unfortunate elimination of compatriot Rafael Nadal. 

    Jannik Sinner has a 2-1 advantage over Alcaraz, and both victories were recorded at Wimbledon and Umag. The third-seeded Alcaraz said, "I believed in myself, it was pretty tough. I was a breakdown in the fifth set. It was tough to come back after losing the fourth set."

    Alcaraz bounced back from 0-2 in the first set to win the first set and was overpowered in the second one by 33-year-old Cilic. The Spaniard broke in the 10th game of the third set to win it but wasted six break points in the fourth set before winning the decider. 

    Jannik Sinner downs Ilya Ivashka in thrilling five-setter

    Jannik Sinner entered the US Open quarter-finals by defeating Ilya Ivashka 6-1 5-7 6-2 4-6 6-3 and becoming the youngest player since Novak Djokovic to the quarter-finals at all four Grand Slams.

    The 21-year-old Italian was unsteady with his serve, raking in 14 double faults and putting 46 percent of first serves into play. Sinner converted three break points in the first set and claimed five of Ivashka's initial six service games. 

    Ivashka's forehand was challenging for Sinner, eliciting 55 unforced errors from the Italian. "Today, I was struggling, I was not playing my best," said the 11th seed. "But in the fifth set I tried to dig deep and I'm very happy to be in the next round."

    He will now face Carloz Alcaraz in the next round.
