In an interview with the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) website, Mirza discussed her retirement.

In January, the 36-year-old will compete in the women's doubles competition at the Australian Open with Anna Danilina of Kazakhstan. After missing the US Open the previous year due to an elbow ailment, this is her final appearance at a Grand Slam competition.

Mirza had intended to retire after the 2022 season due to a longstanding calf issue, but an elbow injury in August prevented her from competing in the US Open.
"I really don't have the capacity in my mind to emotionally push that much anymore. I turned pro in 2003...Priorities change, and now my priority is not to push my body to the limit every single day," she said to WTA.

After retiring, Mirza will concentrate on her academics in Dubai, where she has lived with her husband, the former Pakistan cricketer Shoaib Malik, for more than ten years.

Mirza, who is recognised as the best female tennis player in her nation, has won six Grand Slam doubles championships. This month at the Australian Open, where she won the women's doubles crown in 2016, she will compete in her most important match.

When Mirza triumphed in her hometown of Hyderabad in 2005, she became the first Indian woman to win a WTA singles title. She entered the top 30 in 2007 and was ranked 27th globally.
