It was the first trophy for Dannil Medvedev since winning the title at the 2021 U.S Open and 14th overall. The 26-year-old Russian did not drop a set throughout the ATP 250 event in Mexico en route to his title victory.

After the victory, Daniil Medvedev said, "Every match was very good, but the final is always special. In the final, you play the best player of the week, so it's always a high-level match. I am really happy that I managed to show some good level, some good shots in such an important match."

Daniil Medvedev went into the championship match against his British opponent with a five-match losing streak in the finals.

Both players were equally matched in the opening set and brook each other two times to make it 5-5. Daniil Medvedev scraped his hand on the court and had to take a medical break as he started bleeding.

However, Daniil Medvedev held his nerves to regain his momentum. He won the next eight games of the match to clinch the opening set 7-5 and finish it off with a bagel in the second.

Cameron Norrie had won his maiden ATP Tour trophy last year at the Los Cabos Open but had to walk away as the runner-up this year.

During the trophy ceremony, Cameron Norrie said, "I fought as hard as I could, but Daniil, he was too good. Well done to you and your team definitely deserved it this week."

Can Daniil Medvedev fend off World No. 1 Push from Carlos Alcaraz and Rafael Nadal

Daniil Medvedev will begin his campaign at the Canada Masters 1000 later this week. He will be able to retain his spot on the top of the Pepperstone ATP Live Rankings despite how he performs at the event.

However, if he advances to the final at the ATP 1000 event in Montreal, Medvedev will confirm his stay at the World No. 1 until the 2022 U.S Open.

Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz will have an opportunity to dethrone him at the Western & Southern Open if Daniil Medvedev loses before reaching at least the quarterfinals at the Canada Masters.
