Tennis News: Iga Swiatek and the legends of tennis compared

With Serena Williams retiring in the same US Open tournament when Iga Swiatek won her third Grand Slam title and maintained her world no. 1 position, many have started comparing her to Williams

Swiatek is only 21 and has joined the list of legends to win their third Grand Slam title under the age of 22 and to hold the position of World no. 1 at such a young age.

During Wimbledon, Swiatek tied the second longest winning streak with Martina Hingis, with 37 consecutive wins in the second round of Wimbledon 2022. After Hingis and Swiatek now, only Steffi Graf has the longest streak record of 66 successive matches.

While the speculations were going on about who would replace Serena Williams in the tennis field, Swiatek showed a terrific performance in the same US Open where Williams retired, making it straightforward for the fans that she may have what it takes to be the new Williams.

Swiatek holds the top position in the WTA rankings, and she has almost double the points of what her US Open final opponent Ons Jabeur holds.

She's marking her dominance in the tennis field as other legends like the Williams sisters, Martina Hingis, Steffi Graf and Martina Navratilova did.

Another reason she might be the new dominant player in the field of tennis is that the US Open victory is her ten straight wins in straight sets.

She reached the finals of 3 Grand Slams and won all 3. First, she won the French Open 2020, then the 2022 title and now the US Open title of 2022.

If these many achievements weren't enough, Iga has been holding the world no. 1 spot for 24 weeks now and given her advantage over Jabeur, who's in the second position, she is not leaving the top position anytime soon.

Serena Williams and Steffi Graf hold the record of being in the top position for the most consecutive weeks: 186. Iga is only 21 and has been holding the position for 24 weeks.

If everything goes well for her, she might even become the youngest woman to hold the position for the most consecutive weeks.

Given all of Iga Swiatek's achievements so far, hopefully, it may not be wrong to say that she does qualify to be the new Williams.
