No. 11 seed Daria Kasatkina went to the tournament at the top of her form, having won the title at the Silicon Valley Classic last week. However, her winning run was ended by World No. 51 Bianca Andreescu on the outdoor hardcourts in Toronto.

It is the third time Bianca Andreescu has won the first round at the Canadian Open in her career. The victory against Daria Kasatkina was also her tenth victory against a Top-10 opponent.

There was not much to separate both the players in the opening set. Bianca Andreescu held on serve to get a 4-2 lead. Daria Kasatkina saved two set points at 5-3 and made it 5-5 to send the set into a tiebreak.

The 25-year-old Russian raced to a 1-3 lead in the tiebreak, but Bianca Andreescu roared back to clinch the hard-fought first set after one hour and 25 minutes of play.

Seven of the ten games of the second set went against the serve. However, Bianca Andreescu upped her game at the right moment to secure her victory with a winning volley.

After the victory, Bianca Andreescu said, "I was very happy with how relaxed I was. That's what I did the last two times I played Kasatkina was just staying as relaxed as I can. Obviously, being consistent but also aggressive because you don't always want to get into those long rallies with her. I mean, she loves that."

The victory improved the win-loss record of Bianca Andreescu against Daria Kasatkina to 3-0.

The 22-year-old Canadian will next face Alizé Cornet of France in a second-round clash on August 11.

In another first-round match, British sensation Emma Raducanu was knocked out in straight sets 7-6(7-0), 6-2 by Camila Giorgi of Italy.

Naomi Osaka was reduced to tears at the Canadian Open

Four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka was trailing Kaia Kanepi of Estonia 6-7 (4-7) 0-3 in the first round of the Canadian Open on August 10.

Naomi Osaka began struggling with a back injury during the match and received treatment after taking a medical break. However, she decided not to risk a bigger problem with U.S Open around the corner and shook hands with Kaia Kanepi before leaving the court as tears rolled down her face.

In a post-match interview, Naomi Osaka said, "I felt my back from the start of the match, and despite trying to push through it, I just wasn't able to today. I would like to pay credit to Kaia for playing well and want to wish her all the best for the rest of the tournament."
