Paula Badosa: Talking trash on court could make tennis more fun

Paula Badosa reckons a bit of trash-talking on court would spice up tennis, although she isn't sure whether some players would be able to cope with it.

    Paula Badosa. Paula Badosa.

Although trash-talking has historically been a part of sports, including tennis, it has largely been reduced in frequency.

It is exceedingly rare to hear it during an actual match, but it may occur frequently during practice or exhibition games.

In contrast, it is more widespread in certain other sports, with some athletes proposing that it should be permissible in the realm of tennis as well.

"I'm in. Yeah, I mean I'm all day talking trash on the court, but no, it would be totally different," said the world number 33.

"We're not used to that. I mean, traditionally tennis is, it's very, like, polite, but why not?

"It's a new generation, it could be a change and it could be different and fun. But I don't know if women could take that.

"Like maybe they take a little bit more personally, but on men's side, like, I can see it for sure."

The 25-year-old Spaniard spoke after her narrow win over Leylah Fernandez at the Charleston Open - a match she won 7-5 7-6 to progress to the round of 16.

"It was very intense as she started unbelievably well," she said when asked about the match.

"At the beginning I was thinking, is it me or she's playing very, very good.

"So yeah, she was playing well, she was going for it, lines, serving well and I had to adapt very fast because everything was going very fast."
