Novak Djokovic says injured elbow 'not ideal but good enough' ahead of return

As he prepares to return to action after a rare early exit in Monte Carlo, Novak Djokovic admits his injured elbow still hasn't fully recovered.

    Novak Djokovic. Novak Djokovic.

Novak Djokovic has revealed that he is still struggling with an elbow injury as he prepares for this week's Srpska Open following his early exit from the Monte Carlo Masters last week.

The world number one lost in the last 16 to Lorenzo Musetti after his serve was broken eight times by the Italian.

"My elbow is not in an ideal shape but good enough to be ready for the first match," Djokovic told reporters ahead of the tournament.

"Naturally, I wasn't satisfied with the result in Monte Carlo. But, ever since I landed, I've felt welcomed in Banja Luka, a lot of positive energy and positive emotions."

Djokovic, who had elbow surgery in 2018, will face 18-year-old Luca Van Assche in the second round on Wednesday after the Frenchman claimed a 1-6 7-6(7-4) 6-4 victory over three-time grand slam champion Stan Wawrinka.

Djokovic admitted he doesn't know much about Van Assche, but he believes he's a real fighter and fast, adding that "no one should be underestimated."

Van Assche is ranked 87th in the world and expressed his excitement at the opportunity to play against Djokovic, saying it would be an incredible match.

"It will be incredible for me and I'm only 18," he said of playing Djokovic.

"Novak is a true champion. Not only in tennis but in sports in general. I know I'll have to give my all to win."

Djokovic won the Australian Open earlier this year to draw level with Rafael Nadal's men's record tally of 22 Grand Slam titles.
