Novak Djokovic broke past stubborn early resistance from Yoshiko Nishioka in the first two sets to improve his record in the opening round of the clay Grand Slam to 18-0. He saved three break points across five deuces in the ten-minute opening game.

Novak Djokovic ended the match with a third set bagel and a display of looped baseline groundstrokes and excellent drop shots against Yoshiko Nishioka. At times, the latter troubled the Serb with his movement across the court and determination.

After the match, Novak Djokovic said, "I have been feeling very well on clay in the last three, four weeks, of course," Djokovic said. "Excited to bring out the intensity on the court and compete with the guys. I'm happy to be back. Roland Garros is one of the biggest tournaments in the world, and the memories from last year still are fresh in my head, in my mind. It was nice to be back on the centre court."

Novak Djokovic is the No. 1 seed at Roland Garros for the fourth consecutive time. In the past 17 years, he has reached at least the quarter-finals or better in the tournament. The 20-time Grand Slam winner is currently at the top of the Pepperstone ATP Rankings for a record 371st week.

Rafael Nadal cruises past Jordan Thompson to reach the second round

Rafael Nadal defeated Jordan Thomspon of Australia 6-2 6-2 6-2 in the opening round of the French Open at Stade Roland Garros to secure a straight-sets victory.

The 35-year-old fifth seed aims to reclaim his French Open crown after losing to Novak Djokovic in last year's final, though he has been seeded outside the top four at Roland Garros for the second time in his career.

Rafael Nadal won the opening set with a brilliant backhand volley winner to break for 2-1 and then widened the lead to 4-1 with a crushing forehand. The Spaniard easily won the second set with service breaks in the first, fifth and seventh games. Jordan Thomspon tried to fight back in the third set, but Rafael Nadal moved to 3-2 with a brilliant forehand stunner, followed by Nadal winning three consecutive games to secure his victory.

After the match, Rafael Nadal said, "I'm very happy with the victory today. I'm happy to get through in three sets. It's a first-round, a positive match for me—straight sets but with significant room for improvement.

Cameron Norrie beats Manuel Guinard in Paris

Cameron Norrie cruised past Manuel Guinard of France 7-5, 6-2, 6-0 to secure a straight-sets victory in the opening round of Roland Garros.

Cameron Norrie went into the match fresh from his title win at Lyon Open last weekend. After a long battle in the first set, the Britisher made short work of his French opponent and ended the match with a third set bagel.

In a post-match interview, Cameron Noorie said, "It is so nice to get my first win here this year. I have to be patient on the clay. When I am playing well, I can love it and then when I am not; I have moments where I don't like it so much. It feels really good to win.

He is set to face Jason Kubler of Australia in the second round of the French Open on May 25.
