French Open: Igs Swiatek survives Kovinic for 31st straight win, advances to French Open last 16

     

    World No. 1 Iga Swiatek defeated Danka Kovinic of Montenegro 6-3, 7-8 at Stade Roland Garros on May 28 to advance to the fourth round of the French Open

    No.1 seed Iga Swiatek extended her winning streak to 31 with a victory over Danka Kovinic. The 2020 Roland Garros champion has now reached the last 16 in all of her French Open appearances; the win also improved her win-loss record to 17-2.

    World No. 95 Danka Kovinic was the first player from Montenegro to reach the third round at the French Grand Slam. Iga Swiatek had a 4-2, 30-0 lead in the opening set, but she faltered due to a loose forehand, allowing Koviniv to get on serve. However, the Montenegrin failed to find her footing and committed four unfocused errors. Iga Swiatek broke Danka Kovinic and won the first set 6-3.

    Iga Swiatek got a quick 4-1 lead in the second set, but her forehand faltered again. This time, Danka Kovinic pounced at the opportunity and won four straight games with some excellent drop shots to get a 4-5 lead. Iga Swiatek summoned her better tennis at the crucial moment and delivered two solid service games to advance to the fourth round.

    In a post-match interview, Iga Swiatek said, "I changed the tactics in the second set a little bit of playing less risky, but then I made some mistakes. I lost my breaks. I'm not perfectly happy with that, but overall I am happy with the performance and came back in the second set.

    Iga Swiatek has been unstoppable this season. She will face Chinese teenager Qinwen Zheng in the fourth round of the French Open on May 30.

    Aryna Sabalenka knocked out of the French Open by Camila Giorgi

    Camila Giorgi of Italy defeated former World No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka 4-6 6-1 6-0 at Stade Roland Garros on May 28 in the third round of the French Open.

    Seventh seed Aryna Sabalenka won the first set 4-6 after a hard-fought battle with her Italian opponent. However, Sabalenka failed to offer even a little trouble to her Italian opponent in the final two sets. Camila Giorgi pulled off a remarkable reversal on Court Simonne Mathieu, winning 12 of the 13 games in the last two sets to wrap up the one hour and 42 minutes match with a third set bagel.

    Camila Giorgi will face Daria Kasatkina of Russia for a quarterfinal spot in the fourth round of the Roland Garros on May 30.
