Francesca Jones reaches first WTA semi-final as Dan Evans follows suit in Morocco

Britain's Francesca Jones advanced to her first-ever WTA semi-final after beating Laura Pigossi in straight sets at the Copa Colsanitas.

    Francesca Jones. Francesca Jones.

Her impressive run in the competition continues with the world number 817 having already upset third seed Nuria Parrizas Diaz before going on to beat Carol Zhao in the last 16.

Jones pulled off another big win against sixth seed Pigossi in their quarter-final contest, winning 6-4 6-2 for a place in the final four, where she will face Tatjana Maria.

Elsewhere world number five Ons Jabeur reached her third straight Credit One Charleston Open semi-final.

After winning the first set 6-0 and leading the second 4-1, the number two seed reached the next stage after opponent Anna Kalinskaya retired due to illness.

Over on the men's circuit, Dan Evans defeated Andrea Vavassori in straight sets to reach the semi-finals of the Grand Prix Hassan II in Marrakech.

A comfortable win saw world number 30 Evans defeat Italian qualifier and world number 201 Vavassori 6-3 7-5 in their quarter-final clash.

The win now means second seed Evans will take on Roberto Carballes Baena in the semi-finals after the Spaniard beat Tallon Griekspoor in their quarter-final match-up.

"I played a bit better today than yesterday and that's important," Evans said on the ATP Tour website.

"It's pleasing as well to get another win. He's been playing very well. He'd come through qualifying. He has a very, very good game for every surface, but very different for this surface.

"So it was a difficult match and I had to focus really hard and I'm happy I played very well and won."
