Alcaraz beat South Korea's Kwon Soon-woo 6-4, 7-6(1) in the second match of the tie. This gave Spain the win since Roberto Bautista Agut had defeated Hong Seong Chan 6-1, 6-3 in the earlier bout.

The tie took place in Valencia, which meant a rabid home crowd backed the Spaniards on the court. But given the disparity in rankings between the two nations, a win always seemed like a formality for Spain.

The result now means that Spain, on top of Group B ahead of Canada, will play their quarterfinal bout in November and front of another home crowd in Malaga.

However, Canada did get an upset win over Spain in their tie, thanks in no small part to US Open champion Alcaraz losing his match.

Bautista Agut gave Spain the lead in the match, beating Vasek Pospisil 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 in the first match. However, the second singles match saw Alcaraz lose to Felix Auger-Aliassime.

Auger-Aliassime showed no pressure despite facing a partisan Spanish crowd and stunned the newly crowned world number one 6-7(3), 6-4, 6-2.

To make things more impressive, Auger-Aliassime and Pospisil won the deciding doubles match despite the former having little to no rest time between the games.

In other action, Germany took the top spot in Group C ahead of Australia when doubles pairing Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puertz beat Matthew Edben and Max Purcell.

This was after Jan-Lennard Struff beat Purcell 6-1, 7-5 in the singles match, and Thanasi Kokkinakis beat Oscar Otte 7-6(6), 6-1 to keep the tie alive.

Italy beating Sweden 2-1 in Group A meant that not only did the former qualify for the quarters as group toppers, but Croatia sneaked into the last 8 in second place.

Croatia began their campaign with a 3-0 loss to Italy but beat Sweden 2-1 and thrashed Argentina 3-0.

However, there was bad news for India, who lost 3-1 in their World Group 1 tie against Norway due to a poor showing.

Prajnesh Gunneswaran lost 6-1, 6-4 to Casper Ruud in the first match, before Ramkumar Ramanathan shockingly lost to Viktor Durasovic to leave India 2-0 behind after Day 1.

However, the third and fourth rounds were played regardless. Yuki Bhambri and Saket Myneni lost to the doubles pairing of Ruud and Durasovic.

India's solitary win came courtesy of Sumit Nagal, who took on 22-year-old Lukas Hellum Lilleengen and beat him 6-2, 6-1.

The result means that India must go back to the qualifiers and play against the winners of World Group 2 in a bid to stay alive in the competition.

The quarterfinals of the Davis Cup will take place from November 22-27 in the Spanish town of Malaga. Germany will take on Canada, whereas Australia will face the Netherlands.

Italy will face off against the USA, whereas Spain will face Croatia.
