ATP Finals: Novak Djokovic set to face Jannik Sinner in season swansong

    Novak Djokovic. Novak Djokovic.

Novak Djokovic was at his very best when he defeated young pretender Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets to reach the last match at the ATP Finals.

The world number one eased past number two Alcaraz 6-3 6-2 at Pala Alpitour in Turin and will face Italy's Jannik Sinner in the final on Sunday.

After winning the first set, an early break in the second put the Serbian in charge of the contest.

Alcaraz failed to convert any of his four break points during the match and two missed opportunities in the second set let Djokovic off the hook and he took it 6-2 to seal his place in the final.

"One of the best matches of the year in these circumstances playing probably the biggest rival I had this year, Carlos," said Djokovic, as per atptour.com.

"We had some epic matches. Actually, all three matches we played this year were marathon matches that went the distance. I think everyone expected, including probably both of us, that we were going to have a long night, a big fight, a long match.

"I just managed to I guess step it up. When I broke his serve at 4-3 in the first set, played a really flawless match until the end of the match. Played great tennis, high level, put a lot of pressure on his service games, made him play. I served really well when I needed to.

"Couldn't be coming at a better time for me, considering that I maybe wasn't playing my best tennis in the first three group stages, matches of the group stages. But tonight I played close to my very, very best."

Djokovic lost to Sinner, the world number four, for the first time in a group-stage match on Tuesday.

Earlier on Saturday, Sinner became the first Italian to reach the final of the ATP finals when he beat Daniil Medvedev 6-3 6-7(4) 6-1.

The home favourite took two hours and 29 minutes to win, recovering from losing the second set tiebreak.
