Delbonis gave Murray a strong fight, particularly in the first set as both players defended their serve stubbornly.

The game went into a tie-break and it was only the combination of an unforced error and a double fault by the Argentine which handed Murray the set.

The second set was much easier for the Scot against the world No. 36 as he saw out the match 7-6(4) 6-1.

Medvedev received a bye into the second round of the competition, while Murray has not won successive games since January’s Sydney Classic.

The Russian has won their one and only encounter thus far in 2019. Murray is aware just how much of a threat he will pose, saying, "Obviously a tough match.

"He's played extremely well on the hard courts the last few seasons. He deserves to be right up there at the top of the game.

"It'll be a big challenge for me, it'll be a great test. I've got a big training block after this tournament, and it'll be a really good test for where my game's at and things I need to work on as well against him. So I'm looking forward to that."

The game will take place on Saturday, March 26.
