Tennis News: Russian Revolution – who are the players from Russia set to dominate the sport?

Tennis has always had a steady presence of Russian players on tour. The likes of Yevgeny Kafelnikov, Maria Sharapova, Marat Safin and Svetlana Kuznetsova have previously won titles on the ATP and WTA tours over the years

As well as Grand Slams. And one could argue that Russia's presence on the tennis circuit, even right now, has never been more robust given the depth of talent they possess.

This talented bunch of tennis players are spearheaded by Daniil Medvedev, the 2021 US Open champion and a two-time Australian Open finalist (2020 & 2021).

Medvedev has emerged as the player likeliest to break the dominance of the 'Big 3,' i.e. Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic. Indeed, Medvedev beat Djokovic to win the US Open in 2021.

He also beat the Serb en route to the ATP Finals title at the end of 2020 and was a crucial part of Russia's Davis Cup-winning side in 2021.

Indeed, he was the world number 1 for a large part of 2022, thanks partly to Novak Djokovic's inability to compete in two of the four Grand Slams due to not being vaccinated against COVID-19.

He won't end the year atop the rankings but will again be part of the ATP Finals. At 26 years old, he is primed to dominate the sport for at least the next few years.

Besides him, the ATP tour also features the likes of Andrei Rublev and Karen Khachanov. Rublev is ranked 11th in the world and is seen as one for the future, having already won 11 career titles.

He is yet to make it beyond the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam, but his talent and improvement over the years mean a Slam breakthrough will happen soon enough.

Rublev is also an Olympic gold medallist, having won the mixed doubles gold in the Tokyo Olympics alongside Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.

Khachanov is another talented prospect, having won four career titles up until this point – including an ATP Masters title at Paris in 2018.

The Russian is also an Olympic medallist; he won the silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics due to losing the final to Alexander Zverev.

Daria Kasatkina is the number 1 Russian tennis player and 9th in the WTA rankings on the women's side. The 25-year-old has won 6 titles on the WTA tour, although a Grand Slam breakthrough remains elusive.

Nevertheless, she seems the likeliest Russian tennis to win a singles Slam title on the women's tour. But she isn't the only bright prospect from Russia in the women's division.

Veronika Kudermetova is another promising prospect, although she only won her first and only WTA singles title in 2021. Nevertheless, she has shown rapid improvement since.

She made it to the quarters of the French Open in 2022 and the fourth round of the 2022 US Open and could improve further in the coming years.

It is an excellent time to be a Russian tennis fan, given the sheer talent level in their current ranks.
