T20 World Cup 2022: India's fixtures, venues and the likelihood of winning at these venues

The T20 World Cup 2022 is set to begin very soon, and all the fans around India are excited at the prospect of back-to-back World Cups, given the last edition of the tournament was held in 2021

India will be keen to better their showing from 2021, where they lost their first two group games – including one to arch-rivals Pakistan – and then failed to qualify for the knockout stages.

The World Cup will be held in Australia, offering different conditions for the Indian team to navigate.

Let us now take a look at India’s schedule, the grounds at which they will play their matches and what their chances of winning on those grounds are.

Here is India’s schedule for the group stages of the T20 World Cup:

India vs Pakistan – 23 October (Sunday) at 1:30 PM IST

India vs A2 – 27 October (Thursday) at 12:30 PM IST

India vs South Africa – 30 October (Sunday) at 4:30 PM IST

India vs Bangladesh – 2 November (Wednesday) at 1:30 PM IST

India vs B1 – 6 November (Sunday) at 1:30 PM IST

The venues at which India will be playing are the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) in Melbourne, the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) in Sydney, the Optus Stadium in Perth and the Adelaide Oval in Adelaide.

A look at India’s records at all these venues leads to some exciting results. At the MCG, India’s history is positive – they’ve played four T20Is and won two of them, with one being a loss and the other having no result due to a rain washout.

They have a better record in the SCG, a theme for India across formats. In four T20Is played in Sydney, India has won three of them.

However, they did lose their last T20I played at the venue, and it is also worth noting that all three of their wins came while batting first – whereas their only loss came when batting second.

This should give the team some confidence, given they generally prefer chasing rather than setting a target for the opposition.

It’s a little harder to judge India’s record at the Perth Stadium, given they have never played a T20I in that particular venue.

Their sole match at that stadium was a test match during the 2018 series, and they lost that match comprehensively.

India’s record at the Adelaide Oval is good – they have a 100% win record at the venue, but that stat is severely skewed by the fact they’ve only played one game at the venue.

That one game came back in January 2016 – almost six years ago, meaning the team currently sports a very different look from the one that last played and won a game here.

Nevertheless, it is safe to say India will fancy their chances of winning games at all of these venues. It also helps that all of these wickets will have drop-in pitches – these pitches generally stay faithful through the innings and will be very helpful to the batters.

In short, India can be confident of good results and no significant demons on these grounds.
