T20 World Cup 2022: How rain disruption against Bangladesh could spoil India's semi-final chances

Bangladesh captain Shakib al Hasan mentioned India VS Bangladesh is a match where the Indian cricket team will be dominating

"I think it will be a good game. India is the favourite heading into the match. They have come here to win the World Cup; we are not here to win the World Cup," he said in the pre-match press conference.

"You can understand the situation. If we win against India, it will be upset and we will try out best to upset India."

However, even if Bangladesh cannot upset India, another factor beyond their control might spoil their party – rain.

Rain has been the undisputed winner of the T20 World Cup 2022, with four washouts and one match result determined by the Duckworth Lewis Stern method.

And while India has been lucky to avoid the rains thus far, there is rain predicted for the evening on November 2 (Wednesday) at Adelaide – the venue of India vs Bangladesh encounter.

How would rain actually hinder India's chances of making it to the semifinals?

For one, it would ensure that the points between India and Bangladesh would be shared. This would be problematic, given India and Bangladesh are on four points after three games.

However, India splitting points doesn't just help Bangladesh – it also gives a lifeline to Zimbabwe and Pakistan, two teams who need India to drop points to stay in the hunt.

Zimbabwe is on three points, having beaten Pakistan and seen their game against South Africa gets washed out with no result.

However, if India were to get only one point against Bangladesh and somehow lose to Zimbabwe, both these teams would be on a level with five points.

For Pakistan, the equation is simple – they need to win their next two games and hope that the top two teams in India and South Africa drop points.

Only then do Pakistan stay in the hunt, so they would be rooting for a rain washout in the India VS Bangladesh match.

It would not only see India drop points but also take away from Bangladesh's points – which would help Pakistan considerably.

Purely from an Indian perspective, however, a washout against Bangladesh would ramp up the pressure on their final group-stage game against Zimbabwe.

And while Zimbabwe might seem easy, they have proved in this tournament that they are no pushovers in the shortest format of the game.

They beat Pakistan due to the former's inept approach and a creditable never-say-die attitude from the Chevrons.

And that spirit of not knowing when they're beaten would make them such tricky customers for the Indian team.

All in all, Rohit Sharma and co., I hope the rain gods continue to be generous to them and ensure any chance of a washout is washed away.
