It was the first-ever meeting between Sporting CP and Tottenham Hotspur at any competition. Both teams played well but struggled to convert throughout the match.

The match was close to finishing off with a goalless draw. However, Sporting CP dealt a double blow to Liverpool as Paulinho in the 90th minute and Arthur Gomes in the third minute of the extended time scored to hand Tottenham Hotspur their first loss.

"The level of the Champions League is high. It is very high. You know that to play in this competition you have to reduce the mistakes because, in the end, you can pay for it," Conte told reporters.

"Tonight we paid a lot, and now we are talking about a defeat against a team that showed they are used to playing in this competition ... You have to keep improving, but that's normal.

"You have to remember that last season we lost to Mura in the Conference League in Slovenia in November. I think we took an important step forward then because tonight I think it was a fair draw rather than a defeat, to be honest."

Tottenham Hotspur will next face Leicester City in a Premier League clash in London on September 17.
