Trio could return for Champions League clash with Atletico Madrid

Bruno Fernandes, Luke Shaw and Scott McTominay all trained for Manchester United on Monday, with all three potentially available for Tuesday’s crunch Champions League game against Atletico Madrid.

McTominay has recovered from a calf issue while Fernandes and Shaw have both been missing for Covid-related reasons.

United host the Spanish side with the tie finely poised following a 1-1 draw at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium three weeks ago.

Should they win the second leg, they will qualify for the last eight of the Champions League.

Much can change in football in a week, with last Monday seeing a post-mortem following United’s 4-1 defeat to bitter rivals Manchester City.

Since then, a Cristiano Ronaldo hat-trick guided them to a 3-2 win against Tottenham Hotspur, with Jadon Sancho in particular putting in an excellent display.

Speaking about the England winger, interim boss Ralf Rangnick discussed his improvement after he initially struggled to have an impact following his £73m move from Borussia Dortmund back in the summer.

He said, "In the end it's all about confidence.

"He is now recognisable to the Jadon Sancho I have known since he was 18. As you know, when he was 17 I was trying to convince him to join us at Leipzig. Unfortunately, he decided to go to Dortmund which was not the worst choice he could make at the time.

"When I came here it was clear we had to try everything to help him to get the best version of himself.

"They paid quite a few pounds for him in order to lure him away from Borussia Dortmund and if you pay that amount of money in a transfer fee for a player, he should perform on this kind of level.

"He told me that of course it was a problem for him to get adjusted to the intensity and physicality of the league.

"Now he has managed to do that. I'm happy to see him play at that kind of level right now."
