This means the 23-year-old England defender will also miss the Three Lions’ games against Switzerland and Ivory Coast, which are due to take place next week.

Confirming the news, Klopp said, "Trent is out with a hamstring, so he cannot be part of England too.

"Not good news, we will see how long that takes."

Liverpool’s next game is against Championship side Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup quarter-finals on Sunday, with their bid for a quadruple still very much on.

James Milner and Joe Gomez are the players most likely to replace Alexander-Arnold but Klopp admitted that they wouldn’t be a like-for-like swap.

He continued, "Of course to replace Trent is difficult but possible.

"I don't know any player who plays like Trent, so it’s difficult to find a one-to-one replacement.

"We have Milly [Milner], Joe, theoretically we can change the system as well, these kind of things. So, we have a couple of options.

"When you look in the past when Milly has had to step up, he has done incredibly well. And if not, maybe we have a young solution."

Alexander-Arnold’s absence could be pivotal to both Liverpool’s Premier League and Champions League hopes.

They are currently just one point behind Manchester City at the top of the domestic league and have been drawn against Benfica in the quarter-finals of the Champions League, with the first leg set to take place on April 5 or 6.

He could also miss the vital clash against City at the Etihad on April 10, with the result potentially going a long way to determining the destination of the Premier League title.
