Real Madrid's Champions League disappointment spilled over into their Sunday clash against Valencia, resulting in a 1-0 defeat at Estadio Mestalla.

Real Madrid's hopes of bouncing back from their midweek Champions League disappointment were dashed as they succumbed to a narrow 1-0 defeat against Valencia at the Estadio Mestalla on Sunday.

Carlo Ancelotti, the Real Madrid manager, opted for several changes in the line-up following their loss to Manchester City, but unfortunately, they failed to yield the desired results. Despite dominating possession for the majority of the game, Los Blancos struggled to truly test Giorgi Mamardashvili, Valencia's goalkeeper.

In contrast, Valencia managed to create better scoring opportunities despite having less possession. Their breakthrough came in the 33rd minute when Justin Kluivert delivered a sublime through ball that Diego Lopez calmly slotted home, registering his maiden goal for the club.

Real showed improvement in the second half, with substitute Rodrygo making an immediate impact. However, his effort was expertly saved by Mamardashvili. Lopez also came close to doubling Valencia's lead, only to be denied by an excellent save from Thibaut Courtois, Real Madrid's shot-stopper.

The match was marred by an unfortunate incident of alleged racist abuse from a Valencia supporter towards Vinicius Junior, resulting in a halt of play for approximately 10 minutes. This shameful act further tarnished the reputation of the Brazilian player, who, in stoppage time, was shown a red card for retaliating against Hugo Duro.

Valencia's victory provided them with some respite from the threat of relegation in La Liga, while Real Madrid slipped to the third position in the table, trailing behind their city rivals, Atletico Madrid. Atletico secured a convincing 3-0 win over Osasuna, courtesy of goals from Yannick Carrasco, Saul Niguez, and Angel Correa.

Meanwhile, Espanyol boosted their survival chances in the relegation battle with a hard-fought 2-1 triumph against Rayo Vallecano. The fiercely contested Seville derby ended in a goalless draw between Sevilla and Real Betis, with Juan Miranda of Real Betis receiving a late red card.
