Premier League: Review - Aston Villa climbed up the table after a 1-0 win over Southampton

Steven Gerrard's side Aston Villa carved out a 1-0 win at home against Southampton on Friday. This victory would be a step up for the former Liverpool star Steven Gerrard, thanks to Jacob Ramsey's first-half strike

The win has removed Villa from the relegation zone, and they now have seven points on their tally, similar to Southampton seven games into the Premier League season.

Villa Park, frequented by the Villa-supporting new Prince of Wales over the years. Before the win, Southampton were three points and five spots ahead on the table.

Villa made a fierce start to the match, but they couldn't convert their chances as Leon Bailey took possession but failed to create anything out of it.

The side kept squandering their chances in the final third, and although Southampton was not actively attacking, they missed countless opportunities. James Ward-Prowse's attempt was blocked after Ezri Konsa intervened.

Phillipe Coutinho then tackled Ward-Prowse going ahead to send the ball from over 20 yards out. His cross reached Ollie Watkins, who shot a header that Gavin Bazunu momentarily blocked.

The ball bounced off the bar, only for Jacob Ramsey to find and convert a perfect chance. Villa was about to net another goal before half-time as substitute Douglas Luiz's in-swinging corner tipped over the bar by Bazunu.

Luiz then made another attempt to score, and Ramsey also came close. Villa continued to hold their ground, and Stuart Armstrong's header went wide. Tyrone Mings, who couldn't impress Gareth Southgate in the England manager's latest squad, led Villa's defensive setup.

Cottagers score three goals in five second-half minutes to defeat Nottingham Forest

The Cottagers netted three goals through Tosin Adarabioyo, Joao Palhinha and Harrison Reed to beat Forest as they reel from a fourth consecutive loss.

Fulham fired three times in five minutes at the City Ground and have climbed to sixth in the Premier League rankings. Marco Silva's side was a goal down after Taiwo Awoniyi's early 11th-minute plan moving into the second half.

In the 55th minute, Tosin Adarabioyo equalised with a stunning header from Willian's corner. Joao Palhinha pocketed the lead for Fulham by converting just outside the Forest box three minutes later.

Harrison Reed then scored his first goal for the club from Bobby Decordova-Reid's cross in the 60th minute. Forest scored their second goal through substitute Lewis O'Brien at 77 minutes, but an equaliser was far from their reach.

Their fourth back-to-back loss puts them in the relegation zone, seven points behind their newly-promoted rivals. After their 3-2 loss against Fulham, Nottingham Forest manager Steve Cooper said: "I think a lot of it is self-inflicted. I don't think we can just say things aren't going our way."

"We will look at ourselves first and see that we are not doing certain things in our game well," he added. Meanwhile, Fulham head coach Marco Silva gushed about his team after the victory, "We were the best team on the pitch and we deserved the three points. After their first goal, we took control of the match."

He summed up the win as a fantastic feeling despite his team struggling in the last few minutes and showed gratitude towards his players who have been working hard, as admitted by the coach.
