The Blues thought they had done enough to steal a win when Jorginho converted a late penalty conceded by Scott McTominay.

However, a looping header from Casemiro in injury time was enough to ensure that both teams left the match with a point each.

In truth, it was the result that this game deserved. While both teams went through spells of dominating possession, neither side got enough of a foothold into the game.

It didn’t help matters that both teams conspired to miss out on the few chances they did create. Marcus Rashford missed a couple of good opportunities early in the first half.

It was a period wherein United dominated, as they played through Chelsea’s midfield quickly, and the Blues struggled in possession.

Manager Graham Potter, who is yet to lose a game since he took charge after replacing Thomas Tuchel, made a tactical tweak that brought the Blues back into the game.

He subbed off Marc Cucurella and brought on Mateo Kovacic, switching to a 4-3-3 formation instead of the usual 3-4-3.

The move worked; Chelsea suddenly looked more solid in midfield, and the forwards no longer seemed isolated, as they had been when the midfield was overrun.

However, while Chelsea did dominate possession, quality chances were few and far between. Indeed, until the 80th minute, it seemed the game was heading for a goalless draw.

That was until McTominay inexplicably fouled substitute striker Armando Broja, dragging him down inside the penalty area. A spot kick was duly awarded.

Jorginho, ever the master in such situations, kept his nerve. But with so little time left, United threw the kitchen sink at Chelsea, who would have felt their hearts sink when 6 minutes were added on at the end of the second half.

Indeed, 3 minutes into added time, the equalizer arrived. And the timing of the goal left the home team little time to mount a counter-attack.

After the match, Potter admitted his side deserved only a point, given how the game played out. “It’s disappointing because we were 1-0 ahead at the end,” he told the broadcasters after the match.

“But over the course of the game a point is about right and I’m not sure we did enough to win it. We had chances, they had chances so a point is about right.”

And his counterpart Erik ten Hag agreed. “I think it is a fair result. I would have been disappointed if we had gone without a point because we didn’t deserve that.

“At the end of a tough week to come here and bring the point home, we did well”.

Ten Hag also said it was too early to comment on Raphael Varane, who went off injured late in the second half and was in tears.

“It’s difficult to say how it is now because it is so soon after the game. We have to wait 24 hours, and then we will know what it is.”

The result leaves Chelsea in fourth and United in fifth, respectively.
