Tyrell Malacia, 22, becomes the club's first signing since Erik ten Hag's appointment as manager in May.

The left-back joins United after the Red Devils outbid Lyon for their first senior signing of the summer transfer window.

The Netherlands international was due to join Lyon before United snatched the contract at the last minute.

Lyon has been negotiating a fee of €13 million upfront, plus €2 million in add-ons, with Feyenoord for Malacia.

The French side had intended to complete the deal last Tuesday, but United's initial proposal of €15 million, which may grow to €17 million, trumped it.

The 22-year-old has agreed to a four-year deal that will keep him at Old Trafford until the conclusion of the 2025-26 season, with the option to extend for another year.

Who is Tyrell Malacia of the Netherlands?

Erik Ten Hag was delighted by Malacia's performance against Ajax in the Eredivisie, prompting the new Red Devils manager to bid this summer.

Malacia joined Feyenoord's youth academy at nine in 2008 and has been with the club for the past 14 years.

He has five senior games for the Netherlands, and his move to United could help increase his profile enough to earn him a spot at the Qatar World Cup in 2022.

"Every winger will have a headache the night before playing against Malacia; he is quick, agile, and has a great work ethic," said Giovanni van Bronckhorst, Malacia's former coach.

Malacia will compete with Shaw and Alex Telles, and his arrival may be the end of Brandon Williams' stint at the club.

While Shaw is still anticipated to start the season as Ten Hag's first-choice left-back, Malacia's injury history may allow him to get substantial involvement as the season unfolds.

Malacia also spoke about his move to Manchester United, and he said: "It's an incredible feeling to have joined Manchester United. This is a new chapter for me, a new league with new teammates and a tremendous manager (Erik ten Hag) leading us.

"I know from playing against his teams in the Eredivisie the qualities he has and what he demands of his players."

"Whilst I know that I am still young and will continue to develop, I can promise the United fans that I will leave everything on the pitch every time I pull on the red shirt. I'll always be thankful to Feyenoord for all they have given to my family and me."

"None of this would be possible if it wasn't for them. Now I'm ready to focus on the future with United and help my new club succeed."

Malacia appeared in 50 games in all competitions last season, helping his team reach the UEFA Conference League final in May.

He made his debut for the Netherlands in September of last year and has five caps to his name.

Manchester United is currently attempting to deal with Ajax to sign Lisandro Martinez. It is believed that they have established themselves as favourites to get the Argentine despite competition from Arsenal.

According to reports on Monday, free agent Christian Eriksen verbally agreed to join Manchester United on a three-year contract.

Manchester United is also still trying to sign Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona.
