Chelsea got off to a good start in the Premier League, beating Everton 1-0 at Goodison Park on Saturday evening despite a slow performance in the opener

Jorginho scored the game's only goal from the penalty spot, while Everton defender Ben Godfrey was stretchered off with a sprained ankle.

The Blues win their first game of the season thanks to a penalty in the ninth minute of first-half stoppage time.

Goodison Park has not been a favourite of Chelsea's for quite some time. They had lost four games in a row and nine of the previous thirteen.

The home side had the majority of the chances in the first half. Still, Thomas Tuchel's team seized the lead and emerged unscathed when Abdoulaye Doucoure fouled Ben Chilwell inside the box, allowing Jorginho to score Chelsea's first goal of the season.

Raheem Sterling was the sharpest of their forward three, with Mason Mount and Kai Havertz quiet, but Tuchel hopes that with time and new arrivals, the synergy and quality will arrive.

    Everton battling injuries

Meanwhile, even in defeat, Everton's manager and former Chelsea great Lampard found encouragement.

Everton posed enough of a threat without a natural striker – Anthony Gordon, Demarai Gray, and Dele Alli all popped up in the centre – for each of Chelsea's back three and goalkeeper Edouard Mendy to rush to the visitors' aid at various stages.

However, Ben Godfrey's early and horrifying lower leg injury was a significant disadvantage for Everton that could not be overlooked.

Both clubs were still getting their bearings in the new season when Everton suffered that setback for Godfrey, which was even more significant than Calvert Lewin's six-week layoff.

Godfrey, anxious to make amends, sprinted back and tackled Kai Havertz, who had gathered the loose ball, but his right leg was caught underneath his body and severely injured, prompting him to signal for help.

He was treated for about ten minutes before being loaded onto a stretcher and rushed immediately to the hospital.

Following Godfrey's injury, eight minutes of extra time were signalled, and Chelsea took the lead in the final.

After Havertz failed to connect properly with a right-wing cross, Sterling kept a Chelsea effort alive before Koulibaly sent Chilwell behind Everton's defence.

Everton posed a danger at the beginning of the second half. Gray had a shooting chance from Alex Iwobi's ball forward after a minor mix-up between Mendy and Silva, and the home side came near to equalizing again if not for some desperate defending.

Thomas Tuchel reacts to the win

The coach also commented about the match: "We have struggled to get points here in past seasons. Today we have the points, and a win is a win. It's the most important for everything, but we have to get better. "

It is unlikely that the defeat will stress Frank Lampard, but he will be far more worried by the injury to two of his central defenders.

When broached about Ben Godfrey and Yerry Mina's injuries, Lampard said, "It feels like it is a small fracture of his leg… We are assessing that. He will be out for a while, Mina is an ankle injury and could be out for a while. When it rains, it pours."

Ben Godfrey was out with what appeared to be a severe ankle injury that could sideline him for several months, while Yerry Mina walked off later in the game after pulling up lame.

Although it was not a statement performance to kick off the new season or the new Todd Boehly era at Chelsea, Thomas Tuchel found uncommon encouragement at Goodison Park.

They don't come here often and win, so it would have been a great source of satisfaction regardless of their performance.
