Football News: David De Gea's 'reduced' contract explained, Neymar released, and Thiago's Liverpool return imminent

The football world is often filled with news that might miss one's attention; such is the fast-paced nature of the news cycle

In this column, we will look at a few critical pieces of news and explain the reasons behind what is happening.

David De Gea to sign a 'reduced' contract?

David De Gea is currently one of Manchester United's highest-paid players, which means that he is getting to start almost all games for the club.

However, his deal expires at the end of the season, and there remain doubts over his long-term viability to be the kind of goalkeeper new manager Erik ten Haag needs in his system.

But United are keen to extend his current deal – albeit on terms that are reduced from the present contract. Moreover, news reports suggest he would be open to such a renewal.

While it is clear that David De Gea is getting on in age and probably isn't the same player he was a few years ago, he's still someone who knows the club well and has a wealth of experience.

Renewing his contract would make sense for the club, especially if he would be open to it. And, in the past, he's suggested he wants to remain at the club as long as possible.

"I would be happy to be here for as long as they want," he said in pre-season. "I want to be here for more years if possible (to finish his career with United), of course.

"If they let me stay here I will stay here, for sure. I'm really comfortable, really happy, and hopefully, before I leave we can win something."

Fraud charges dropped against Neymar Jr.

In a case dating back to his time at Barcelona, Neymar Jr. will take a sigh of relief over the fact that he is no longer being tried for fraud in Spain.

Indeed, the charges stem from his transfer to Barcelona from Santos, in which Spanish prosecutors saw irregularities.

The trial was brought forward in the first place because Neymar lost the appeal made in Spain's High Court.

However, despite facing up to five years in a Spanish prison, Neymar is now off the hook. The reason? The alleged crime occurred in Brazil, meaning Spanish authorities lacked jurisdiction.

What's more, the actions in question aren't criminal offenses in Brazil – meaning the case is dead in the water as things stand.

Thiago Alcantara's return to boost Liverpool

Liverpool's poor start to the 2022/23 season has been down at least partly because the club lacked control in midfield, among a host of other factors.

However, the good news for Reds fans is that midfielder Thiago Alcantara is back in contention for a start vs Leeds United in the Premier League this weekend.

Manager Jurgen Klopp confirmed the Spaniard will be available for the club, which would be a significant boost given the number of players they still have on the sidelines.

The likes of Naby Keita, Joel Matip, Diogo Jota, and Luis Diaz are all unavailable as things stand – meaning Liverpool's season is likelier to get worse before it gets better.
