The Ivory Coast forward, 28, was diagnosed after complaining of feeling ill. Dortmund has finally decided to sign a successor for Haller after long waiting.

The club's chairman has acknowledged that they are looking for a new striker.

Hans-Joachim Watzke, CEO of Borussia Dortmund, has stated that the club will sign a substitute for Sebastien Haller while he recovers from cancer.

The former Ajax forward was diagnosed with a malignant testicular tumour earlier this month and has already completed the first course of therapy.

Haller joined Dortmund from Ajax earlier this summer on a four-year deal costing an estimated £27 million ($33 million). Following the departure of Erling Haaland to Premier League champions Manchester City in May, he was expected to bolster Edin Terzic's assault.

Haller will be away for several months as he recovers from testicular cancer, and Dortmund is seeking a temporary substitute.

"We said as long as we don't have a clear diagnosis, we must keep the ball flat first. That's also a matter of respect for the boy," Borussia Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke said in an interview. "But we have it now, and of course, it's clear then that the downtime will be relatively extended.

"Now dumping everything on Youssoufa Moukoko's shoulders, he's 17 years old, that might be a bit too much. We'll do something again in terms of personnel. Ideally, something should happen in the next eight to ten days," Watzke continued.

Many names have been circulated as possible Haller replacements, including former Manchester United forward Edinson Cavani.

The 35-year-old is a free agent but is said to want €10 million in salaries, which may be a huge stumbling block for Dortmund.

Another name that is making the rounds is Anthony Modeste. The Koln striker, who scored 20 goals in 32 Bundesliga games last season, has been offered a transfer to BVB and is open to the move.

Mauro Icardi, Jhon Cordoba, Krzysztof Piatek, and Edin Dzeko have also been possible targets.

Ajax squad also showed support for Sebastien Haller

After Sebastien Haller was diagnosed with a testicular tumour, his former Ajax teammates showed their support by holding up the number he wore at the club.

After feeling poorly in training, Borussia Dortmund confirmed the prognosis for the 28-year-old striker, who officially joined the club earlier this month in a £31 million deal from the Eredivisie winners

The Ivorian has received an outpouring of support on social media, for which he expressed gratitude and stated that he is committed to 'come back stronger.'

However, his former club Ajax, for whom he scored 47 goals in 66 games across all competitions after signing from West Ham in January 2021, has now expressed their support.

Members of Alfred Schreuder's squad held up an Ajax shirt with the number 22 on the back; the number Haller wore during his 18 months at the Johan Cruyff Arena, in a photo uploaded on the club's official Twitter account.

The image was accompanied by a club message stating, 'We're with you, @HallerSeb.'
