Graham Potter's side have already spent big this month, though the Blues aren't about to put away their wallet just yet. Instead, the club are preparing to shatter the British transfer record after bidding £105.6m for Fernandez.

Should the deal go through, Chelsea would eclipse Manchester City's £100m deal for former Aston Villa star Jack Grealish.

The Stamford Bridge outfit have already splashed close to £200m this winter, bringing in the likes of Mykhaylo Mudryk, Benoit Badiashile, Noni Madueke, Datro Fofana, Andrey Santos and Malo Gusto. Joao Felix also bolstered the squad following his loan move from Atletico Madrid.

Fernandez could join Chelsea's growing list of arrivals should Benfica accept the nine-figure sum.

The midfielder joined the Portuguese outfit in August after moving from Argentine side River Plate for £10m.

Fernandez has scored four goals in 29 Primeira Liga appearances as he helped the side to the top of the standings. The player also found the back of the net during Argentina's World Cup winning campaign.
