Newcastle defeated Arsenal 2-0 in a Premier League match at St. James' Park on May 17, crushing all hopes of a Champions League spot for Mikel Arteta's side

Tottenham is now two points ahead of Arsenal with 66 points at the fourth spot with one match left to play. The victory of Tottenham also guaranteed a third spot finish for Chelsea. The Spurs will face already relegated Norwich City on May 22 and are only a draw away from securing a Champions League spot owing to their superior goal difference.

Arsenal was four points ahead of Tottenham with three games left to play, but a 3-0 loss to Spurs on May 13 heightened the pressure for Mikel Arteta's squad.

Newcastle outplayed Arsenal right from the beginning, with the Gunners struggling to take control of the ball, but neither side was able to open the scoring in the first half. An own goal by Ben White in the 55th minute and Bruno Guimaraes' strike in the 85th minute turned the tide around for Newcastle after a goalless first half.

After the loss, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said, a tough night to swallow. Newcastle deserved to win comfortably. They were much better from the first minute; we had nothing in the game.

"Normally, I will always defend my players. Not tonight. It is too difficult. Newcastle was 100 times better than us in every department, from the beginning to end. It is hard to accept, but that is the reality.

"Newcastle were ten times better than us. The performance was nowhere near what we needed to play in the Champions League. We were not at the races.

    Trouble ahead for Mikel Arteta

While Arsenal takes on  Everton, who may still need a result to stay in the English Premier League, it is looking inevitable that the Gunners will miss out on a top-four place.

Piers Morgan, an ardent Arsenal fan and famous journalist, is unhappy with Arteta, demanding that he be sacked.

He said: "Arteta should be fired. Instead he's been given a new deal and massive pay rise. For abject failure. Utterly ridiculous."

The defeat can have colossal ramifications for Mikel Arteta and Arsenal going ahead. They have been consigned to the Europa League, losing the Champions League spot for the sixth consecutive season.

This game will be remembered long after Mikel Arteta eventually leaves Arsenal, as this was the first crucial game in his job as the manager. He does not have a firm belief because he has not proved himself like established managers such as Pep Guardiola and Antonio Conte until now.

Mikel Arteta will be under a lot of pressure next season. Things will start getting tough for him if Arsenal cannot get a good ranking on the Premier League charts with them going into the Europa League next season.
