Kane scored his seventh goal in six games to put the tie beyond doubt in the second half, condemning Brighton to their sixth straight Premier League defeat in the process.

The victory kept Tottenham’s top four hopes alive, as they are now sit in seventh place, just three points behind bitter local rivals Arsenal, who are currently fourth. However, the Gunners do have a game in hand.

The goal also saw Kane overtake Frank Lampard in the list of all-time Premier League scorers at 178, while there is no-one who has scored more goals away from home in the league than him (95).

Speaking after the game, Conte said, "I am happy for him because in every game he has many chances to score.

"At the start of the season he struggled a bit and didn't score a lot and now he knows very well with this team he has great opportunities to score in every game.

"To have a striker like him makes us stronger but at the same time his feeling now is positive because he knows he will have chances. I think he deserves to win something in his career because we are talking about a fantastic player."

Tottenham’s next fixture sees them host West Ham at White Hart Lane on Sunday, with the Hammers ahead of Spurs only on goal difference.

A win will therefore significantly boost their top four chances, as well as seeing them leapfrog their London rivals into sixth place at least.
