Both squads came into the match intending to win their first match of the competition. The Indian team walked onto the field with the disappointment of losing the quarterfinal spot to Spain just one day ago fresh on their minds. They started the first quarter with fast passes on the forward line to build pressure on the Canadian defence.

Canada pushed back into the Indian circle as Natalie Sourisseau slotted the ball into the Indian net. However, in a moment of luck for India, the goal was not counted as the whistle for a penalty corner had already gone off. The Canadian squad won another penalty corner with just five minutes left in the first quarter. Madeline Secco slipped the ball into the net to make it 0-1 for Canada after receiving a well-placed pass from Kathleen Leahy.

The Indian side recovered from the shock in the second quarter as Monika made excellent use of her skills to make a run for the Canadian circle to level the scores. The Canadian defence held firm, and the first half ended with India trailing 0-1.

India continued to dominate the possession after half-time. Lalremsiami, Vandana Katariya and Monika made forrays into the Canadian circle. However, the much-needed equalizer still evaded them as Canadian defenders Sara McManus, and Hannah Haughn worked overtime to stop a barrage of Indian attacks.

Canada worked hard to stop wave after wave of Indian attacks to hold onto their narrow lead. Still, they eventually slipped to the perseverance of the Indian attackers in the ending moments of the fourth quarter. Gurjit Kaur fired a penalty corner flick that produced a rebound that landed on the feet of Tete Salima. She made no mistake and fired it into the net to send the match into an equalizer.

Woodcroft Amanda and Sourisseau Natalie scored in the shoot-out to give Canada a 2-0 lead after India missed their first two shots. Navneet Kaur and Sonika raised their level at the crucial moment to make it 2-2. Savita and the Canadian goalkeeper Rowan Harris saved shot after shot in a display of brilliance of goalkeeping. Neha fired the ball into the net on India's eighth shot to secure the victory for India after 14 attempts by the two teams.

In a post-match interview, Navneet Kaur said, "It was a very hard match. Savita was brilliant. She saved a lot of shoot-outs, as well as some good saves in the match."

India will next lock horns with Japan in the 9th to 12th place on July 13, while Canada will clash with Korea in the playoffs for the 13-16th place.
