FIH Hockey Pro League: Germany defeats England 4-1 in the second leg

    The German men’s hockey squad defeated England in an exciting match with a 3-2 during the second leg of the FIH Pro League match at SparkassenPark, Mönchengladbach, on May 5, 2022.

    The win gives Germany a one-point lead over Argentina at the second spot on the table.

    Germany turned against England after losing 1-0 in the first leg of the match on May 4.

    There were quite a few memorable moments in the match. Within the regulation time, Hellwig Malte in the 20th minute, Grambusch Tom in the 35th minute and Peillat Gonzalo in the 40th minute were the goal scorers for Germany. In contrast, Condon David in the 2nd minute and Ward Sam in the 39th minute were the sole goal scorers for Germany. 

    The match started with the English side getting an early lead in the 5th minute, while the German side played more aggressively than in the first game. Hellwig Malte scored the equalizer for Germany in the second quarter.

    In the third quarter of the thrilling match, Grambusch Tom scored from a penalty corner to give the home side a lead of 2-1. However, Ward Sam levelled the score once again. Just one minute later, Germany scored again with a shot from Peillat Gonzalo. The third quarter ended with a 3-2 lead for Germany. The English side tried to level the lead once more in the fourth half, but their efforts weren’t enough to break the German defence. 

    The fourth quarter ended with Germany emerging victorious with a 3-2.

    The women’s team from Germany also defeated their English opponents 3-1 in the second leg to avenge their 4-3 loss in the first leg of the match on May 4.

    Germany will next face Argentina in a two-legged match at Ernst Reuter Sportfeld, Berlin, on May 22.
