Esports News: India officially recognises esports as part of a multi-sport event

The Indian Government has officially recognised esports in the country. Esports will now be part of the category of "multi-sport events" in India under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, and a section on "matters related to online gaming" has also been added under MeitY.

The Cabinet Secretariat announced the inclusion of "esports" under the sub-division " Department of Sports" of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. 

The notification was sent on 23 December 2022 under S.O.6062(E). This is essential to legalising an industry that brings in millions, if not billions, of dollars in investment and expenditure every year.

"Great news for us to start the new year. We have constantly been working to highlight the difference between esports and iGaming, and finally, our efforts have been fulfilled," a statement read.

"We welcome this announcement by our Government under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi ji, which will open new avenues for more investment opportunities in this booming industry 

"From now on, we need to build the proper infrastructure, training facilities and coaching for our young esports athletes.

"It is only a matter of time before Esports is in the same league as cricket, football, basketball, etc. and has a similar fan base, size and enthusiasm," Lokesh Suji, Director, Esports Federation of India and Vice President, Asian Esports Federation (AESF)."
