China's e-sports industry brings in $3.71billion in 2023

    A recently released industry report has unveiled that e-sports is thriving in China, with the number of fans reaching an impressive 488 million.

    The Electronic Sports Committee of China Audio-Video and Digital Publishing Association reported that the actual revenue generated by the e-sports industry in 2023 amounted to 26.35 billion yuan (approximately 3.71 billion U.S. dollars), showing a slight 1.31 percent dip year on year.

    E-sports content live streaming emerged as the dominant revenue source, claiming a substantial 80.87 percent share, followed by event revenue at 8.59 percent and club revenue at 6.42 percent.

    In the realm of e-sports game categories, shooting games led the pack with a significant 28 percent, trailed by multiplayer online tactical competitive games at 15.9 percent, and sports-based competitive games at 12.2 percent.

    The year 2023 witnessed a notable surge in non-exhibition e-sports events, totaling 127 events, featuring provincial-level and professional players. Shanghai, Beijing, and Hangzhou emerged as primary hosts for offline e-sports events.

    Beyond national borders, the report highlights the global expansion of China's e-sports industry, particularly in Southeast Asia. Events in countries like Indonesia and the Philippines have gained popularity, evolving into thriving local e-sports competitions.
