South Africa's David Bedingham set to realise childhood dream of playing Test cricket at Newlands

David Bedingham is set to realise a childhood dream of playing Test cricket at Newlands when South Africa take on India at the famous venue from Wednesday.

Bedingham struck 56 on international debut to help the Proteas go 1-0 in the two-match series following a comprehensive innings-and-32-run win in the first Test at Centurion.

The 29-year-old grew up in Cape Town and attended Wynberg Boys High school, the same as one his cricketing heroes - and Proteas legend - Jacques Kallis.

Now Bedingham is set to grace the picturesque venue under the shadow of Table Mountain with the Proteas badge on his chest playing against one of the best team's in the world.

When asked about the magnitude of playing his first Test at his home ground, he said: "In previous years I would come to watch. My friends are all buzzing me, not to enquire if I am playing or not but for the tickets.

"I would have dreamed of coming here to just watch, to have some beers, so it's surreal to maybe have a chance to play. It's special, with my parents and friends and other family here.

"My biggest dream has always been to score a hundred at Newlands, with my friends and family here, and I will try my best."

Bedingham made his international debut in the Boxing Day having already played 87 first-class matches domestically in South African and fruitful few seasons with English county side Durham.

He added: "Last week was enjoyable, all my experiences of first class cricket helped to keep the emotions down and for me to focus as best I could.

"I think I've been well prepared for Test cricket, though the nerves were so high (last week). Hopefully the good form (I showed at Centurion) will continue this week."
