Rohit Sharma confirms Yashasvi Jaiswal Test debut

Indian Test captain Rohit Sharma has confirmed debutant Yashasvi Jaiswal will open the batting in this week's series opener against the West Indies in Roseau.

Jaiswal is averaging 80.21 in first-class cricket - and impressed for the Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League earlier this year.

Jaiswal's inclusion in the XI will see batsman Shubman Gill, who previously opened the batting with Sharma, moved to third position in the order.

"Shubman Gill will play at number three because he wants to play at three. He told coach Rahul Dravid that he has played all of his cricket at number three and four and that he can do better for the team at number three," said Sharma.

"It helps us too as it creates a left-right opening combination. This is what we are trying and hopefully, this becomes a long-term thing as we have been desperate for a left-hander.

"We have got that left-hander in Jaiswal and let's hope that he performs well for the team and he can really make that spot his own."

Seamer Jaydev Unadkat, who returned to Test cricket after a decade-long absence last year, has been named in India's squad alongside the uncapped Mukesh Kumar.

"I have a lot of confidence in the new bowlers. Jaydev Unadkat is not new, he has been around for 10 to 12 years in domestic cricket," added Sharma.

"Mukesh Kumar has been very consistent in domestic cricket. He has done well for his state, in the zonal games and for India A. He has been given a chance, and we will see the combination we play."

The West Indies and India will meet for two Tests. Three ODIs and five T20Is will follow.
