Ireland enjoy promising lead after Lorcan Tucker century on day three against Bangladesh

Ireland reached 286 for eight in their second innings - for a lead of 131 - at the close of play on day three of this week's one-off Test against Bangladesh in Mirpur.

    Lorcan Tucker. Lorcan Tucker.

All-rounder Andy McBrine and tail-ender Graham Hume were unbeaten on 71 and nine, respectively.

Wicketkeeper-batsman Lorcan Tucker earlier struck a maiden Test century. He ended with 108 from 162 deliveries - and spent almost four hours at the crease.

Spinner Shakib Al Hasan, who opted to play for Bangladesh rather than the Kolkata Knight Riders in the ongoing Indian Premier League, bowled a mere six overs on Thursday.

"I thought at some stage after lunch, especially when Tucker was in, we could have set a field where we could have maybe shut off one side of the ground a little bit more, make him hit through the off side a little bit more. That brings the outside edge into play, with Shakib bowling more," said Bangladesh bowling coach Allan Donald.

"But I can't fault the hard work that these guys did today. It was one of the flattest wickets I've seen.

"And there's not a lot of life for the quicks in here, especially halfway down.

"And we've seen a couple of balls not carry to the keeper. But that's Test cricket. No one said it is easy. So I thought they grinded out the day beautifully and yes, once again, one massive tick to Ireland. They fought hard today."

Bangladesh's first-innings head reached 369 all out in response to Ireland's initial 214 all out. Former Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim struck 126.

Ireland have six Test debutants in this fixture, including former Zimbabwe international Peter Moor.
