India VS Bangladesh: Kuldeep Sen and Shahbaz Ahmed selected for ODI series

With the T20 World Cup now out of sight and out of mind for all international teams, the focus is clearly on building for the ICC World Cup set to be held in India next year

It is especially true for the hosts, who have realized that although they possess plenty of talent, their approach needs to be changed for the white-ball format.

Thus, the team is trying out a few new players for the side – and this is not just down to the fact that the team have a lot of veterans in need of replacement. India's depth of quality is such that many talented players might never get a chance to earn an India cap or even be regular in any format. Thus, trying out new players is a luxury India can afford now.

And two players who all eyes will be on come the ODI series against Bangladesh are Kuldeep Sen and Shahbaz Ahmed.

Both are players who regular cricket watchers in India would be familiar with Kuldeep Sen's strengths – they look to bowl fast, hit the hard lengths, and make the batters work hard to get him away.

He also has one more advantage in his arsenal, which is why India appears keen to bring him into the squad; ASAP – he is eager to take on the responsibility for bowling in the death overs.

Kuldeep Sen did that regularly for his IPL franchise Rajasthan Royals. While the results were not always positive, the fact he did not neglect bowling at such a challenging phase of the innings speaks volumes about his character.

There's also the fact that India is crying out for death bowlers right now, especially given the absence of Jasprit Bumrah and the lack of form of Harshal Patel.

Shahbaz Ahmed, however, is an entirely different case. His inclusion is coming about because India needs depth in the spin-bowling all-rounder department.

Ravindra Jadeja remains the first choice when fit, but he's currently out with a potentially long-term injury and isn't getting any younger.

His usual replacement Axar Patel's stock is at an all-time low following a disappointing T20 World Cup campaign. And Washington Sundar, another good option in this department, can be injury prone.

That is why the need for someone like Shahbaz Ahmed. His ability to be a handy option with the bat or ball means he would always be on the selectors' radar sooner rather than later.

And should he get an opportunity and make the most of it during the tour to Bangladesh, India will rest easy knowing squad depth in the all-around department remains.

Currently, there is no guarantee that either Kuldeep Sen or Shahbaz Ahmed will become long-term options for India.

However, the potential for them to do just that is there. Now it's all about them seizing their chances whenever it arrives.
