Hit Wickets in IPL History : Batsmen dismissed in Bizarre Fashion

    If anyone were asked about cricket's most terrible and unfortunate dismissal, the most obvious answer would be 'Hit-wicket'. What can be more regrettable for a batter than colliding with the stumps and getting himself out?

    Although losing a wicket in this way is relatively uncommon, there have been numerous batters who have been hit wicket in cricket till now. Few instances where the batsman hit the wicket in a very bizarre fashion, leaving everyone completely stunned. Let us look at these batsmen in IPL who have lost their wicket hitting the stumps.

    Sai Sudarshan

    Sai Sudarshan's hit wicket became the maiden incident of his career in IPL 2022. It was not just his first such dismissal but the first such incident of this season. In the fixture of Gujarat Titans with Mumbai Indians, the batter got dismissed most bizarrely as he got out hit wicket while trying to play a slow delivery off Kieron Pollard. It was the final ball of the 15th over when Sai Sudarshan attempted to pull the ball. The batter lost his balance as he swung the bat hard but failed to touch the ball. It was followed by Sai Sudarshan's bottom hand coming off the bat and hitting the stumps resulting in him being hit wicket for 14 from 11 balls leaving everyone in splits. 

    Hardik Pandya

    The star Indian all-rounder holds his name on the list due to his bizarre dismissal in the thirteenth edition of the league. In the match against KKR, Hardik was seen having a good start as he smashed a four and a six in the initial few deliveries with ease. Scored 18 from 13 balls in an inning, including two boundaries and a six. In the third delivery of the penultimate, Pandya's stay in the middle ended after being dismissed by hit wicket KKR all-rounder Andre Russell. Batting deep inside the crease to counter Russell's yorker, Pandya's attempt to leave the ball outside off saw him slicing the stump with the bat to bring his innings to an end.

    David Warner

    David Warner brilliantly led Sunrisers Hyderabad to the trophy in the 2016 edition of IPL. However, in the season, David Warner had a bizarre dismissal too. In the match against Punjab, David Warner was seen in great flow; however, an unfortunate dismissal was waiting for him. 

    Warner was leading the team from the front with his bat in a chase of 180. On Axar Patel's ball, the former Hyderabad skipper went deep inside the crease and while in an attempt to whip it, his feet disturbed the stumps. Eventually, wrecking the bails forced Warner to walk back to the dugout for 52 off 41 balls. Sunrisers Hyderabad reached the target and won the game by seven wickets with two balls left.

    Yuvraj Singh

    Despite being considered one of the most elegant batters for India, Yuvraj Singh features in this list with a bizarre hit wicket. This happened in the 37th match of the 2016 edition in the game between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Mumbai Indians. It was Yuvraj's 100th IPL match, and everyone was expecting a great inning from the batsman. In the final over of the match, Yuvraj aimed to get the bowlers better. On the fourth ball of the over, MI seamer Mitchell McClenaghan bowled a full-length wider delivery while Yuvraj stood deep in the crease. However, in the attempt to smash the ball, Yuvraj hit his own wicket.

    He had scored 39 runs from just 23 balls with a strike rate of 169.56. SRH ended their innings with 177 runs on the scoreboard. The target was too high for Mumbai Indians as SRH bowled them out for a mere 92 runs.

    Ravindra Jadeja

    The current CSK star all-rounder has all been once dismissed with a hit wicket in his IPL career. It happened in 2012 when the all-rounder was playing his first season for Chennai Superkings. Ravindra Jadeja is famed for his unique all-around abilities with the ball and bat. In the match against Deccan Chargers, he had a great session with the ball as he bagged four wickets and was looking in great flow with the bat. However, while playing a shot against Dale Steyn, Jadeja smashed on the stumps, getting himself out! With a disappointing wicket, he ended his 48 runs taking CSK's total to 193 runs. Despite the unfortunate dismissal, Jadeja clinched Man of the Match in the match due to his brilliant all-around performance.
