Cricket News: Will his Debut in the county be a blessing for Shubman Gill as an opener?

Indian batter Shubman Gill who has been in fine form in the 50-over format is now set to debut in the County Championship after signing a deal with Glamorgan for the remaining season

With this, Shubman Gill will be the seventh Indian player to be signed by a county team this season. Earlier Cheteshwar Pujara (Sussex Sharks), Washington Sundar (Lancashire Lightning), Umesh Yadav (Middlesex), Navdeep Saini (Kent Spitfires), Krunal Pandya and Mohammed Siraj (Warwickshire) were signed by English County.

Shubman Gill is only the third player to play for Glamorgan in the County Championship after Ravi Shastri and Saurav Ganguly.

The opener displayed superb batting intent in the ODI series against West Indies and Zimbabwe, where he fetched 205 and 245 runs at an average of 102.50 and 122.50, respectively. He is in sublime form as he also achieved his maiden ton in international cricket recently against Zimbabwe.

He got chances as an opener in test cricket but struggled to score big runs or convert his half-centuries into a hundred. Focusing more on red-ball cricket will add value to his experience, and now getting into the county is a blessing for him that will improve his performance in test matches.

Shubman Gill is not part of the Asia Cup and will fly to play for his county team - Glamorgan- with visa clearance. Glamorgan is placed third in the Division two table with five wins in 10 matches and still has four more games left which will resume against Worcestershire on September 5.
