Aiden Markram: Important for South Africa to have the 'right attitude' against Bangladesh

    Aiden Markram. Aiden Markram.

Aiden Markram says South Africa will be looking to back up their record-breaking win over England at the World Cup by showing the "right attitude" against Bangladesh when the sides clash in Mumbai.

The Proteas were brilliant in Saturday's 229-run win over the current world champions and Markram is aware of the need for the team to come back down from that high and refocus.

The global tournament in India has already thrown up a few surprise results with the Proteas themselves going down to the Netherlands before the England encounter.

Markram said: "I think we've all seen in this World Cup now that any team can beat any team on a given day and if you don't respect that fact, I think the game of cricket can really hurt you.

"So, tomorrow is an opportunity for us to take a bit of confidence that we took from England, but ultimately to try to replicate it.

"That's the challenge and that's what we're striving towards. And if we bring the right attitudes and the right intensities, we feel we give ourselves a good chance.

"It's never a guaranteed result at the end of it but it certainly aids us as a team to hopefully perform well."

Markram was the stand-in captain for the victory against England after Temba Bavuma was taken ill on the morning of the game and the batter said the skipper is in "better spirits" and on track to return for the Bangladesh match.

Markram also spoke about the negative record the Proteas have against Bangladesh at previous World Cups, with the 29-year-old part of the 2019 squad that lost to the Asian side at the global tournament in England.

He added: "Whenever you play Bangladesh, it's obviously a massive game for us.

"We haven't done particularly well against them in the past, so that's extra motivation for us to come out and replicate what was a good performance against England, but more from an intensity level and a standards level.

"That's something that we're going to try to focus on and trust that if we take care of those sorts of things, hopefully it's enough for us on the day."
