BWF World Championships: HS Prannoy beats Lakshya Sen, Saina Nehwal bows out

    HS Prannoy mounted an impressive comeback from a set down to secure a victory against Lakshya Sen after one hour and 15 minutes of play. It was the fourth head-to-head meeting between the Indian shuttlers, and both players have now won two matches each.

    HS Prannoy will lock horns with Zhao Junpeng of China in a quarterfinal clash on August 26.

    In men’s doubles, the Indian pairing of Dhruv Kapila and MR Arjun cruised past Loh Kean Hean and Terry Hee of Singapore 17-21, 21-16, 21-17 to book a quarterfinal spot after 58 minutes of play.

    Mr. Arjun and Dhruv Kapila will face the second-seeded Japanese pairing of Takuro Hoki and Yugo Kobayashi in a quarterfinal clash on August 26.

    The Indian duo of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty also advanced to the quarterfinals after beating Lasse Mølhede and Jeppe Bay of Denmark in straight sets.

    Saina Nehwal crashes out of World Championships

    Former World No. 1 Saina Nehwal lost 21-17, 16-21, 21-13 to Busanan Ongbamrungphan of Thailand in a pre-quarterfinal clash of the BWF World Championships on August 25.

    Busanan Ongbamrungphan began aggressively and raced to an 11-3 lead by the break of the first game. Saina Nehwal tried to fight back and narrowed the deficit to 17-19, but her Thai opponent held firm to clinch the first game 21-17.

    Saina Nehwal began the second game with renewed vigor and got an 11-7 lead. She played aggressively after the break and forced the match into a decider.

    Saina Nehwal and Busanan Ongbamrungphan were evenly matched until the third game went into the break. 

    However, the 26-year-old Thai shuttler soon took control of the game as her Indian opponent tried out and secured her victory.

    Busanan Ongbamrungphan will cross swords with Tai Tzu-Ying in a quarterfinal match on August 26.
