Badminton News: UAE to host the Asian Championships

    Badminton Asia and Dubai-based sports management and consultant company Beyond Boundaries finalized a deal in Singapore last month

    The deal finalized that The Badminton Asia Championships will take place in Dubai for the next five years. The signing ceremony took place in the presence of the Badminton Asia chief, Anton Subowo, the secretary of Badminton Asia, Moosa Nashid and Sathya Menon, the chief executive of Beyond Boundaries.

    After the announcement, Anton Subowo said, “Badminton is one of the most popular sports with an all-time high participation and fan base. It will be exciting to host the Badminton Asia Championships in a new arena.”

    The most recent edition of the Badminton Asia Championships took place at Muntinlupa Sports Complex in Manila, the Philippines, in 2022. UAE will host the showpiece continental event for Badminton from 2023 to 2027.

    Lee Zii Jia of Malaysia won the men’s singles event at the 2022 edition of the tournament after winning 21-17, 23-21 against Asian Games champion Jonatan Christie of Indonesia, while Wang Zhiyi of China won the women’s singles trophy.

    The Indonesian pairing of Pramudya Kusumawardana and Yeremia Rambitan won the men’s doubles title. The Chinese duo of Chen Qingchen and Jia Yifan clinched the women’s doubles gold. 

    Zheng Siwei and Huang Yaqiong of China clinched the mixed doubles title.

    The inaugural edition of the Badminton Asia Championships took place in Kaula Lumpur in 1962. The competition had an uneven break during each edition but has been held yearly since 1991, except for 2020 and 2021, because of the Covid-19 pandemic..

    Dubai has previously hosted BWF Super Series at the Hamdan Sports Complex for four years, from 2014 to 2017. Badminton Asia Championships will be the second major badminton event hosted by the United Arab Emirates.
